Piwakawaka and Kakapo Assembly

Ruma Piwakawaka and Ruma Kakapo led the last school assembly for term one.
The children all worked hard to learn a jump jam song - Kotahitanga.
We performed it on the stage.

Well done everyone!  You showed courage and determination to learn and perform our song in front of a large audience.

Superkids in Piwakawaka

Superkids

This week in Ruma Piwakawaka we read the shared big book 'Superkids'.
We loved the story, so we decided that we would have a day at school being 'Superkids'.

First of all we started our day with 'superberries'!
(they were actually kiwiberries)

These gave us super kid energy.
"They tasted soft and juicy like eyeballs" said Sam.
"They tasted like kiwifruit" said Harry.
"They were super yummy and squishy, and they had seeds in them" said Mia.
"I liked them" said Tui.
"They were yucky" said Charlotte.
"They were as fluffy as a cloud" said Britney.

Then, we got creative and painted tall buildings at night,
for our back drop to our super kid flying scenes.

What amazing contributors and communicators we have in Ruma Piwakawaka!

Here are our pictures of our super kids flying through the air,
ready to save the day!

Easter bunny writing

Amazing writing in Ruma Piwakawaka...

When it was Easter time we did some creative writing using our imaginations.
Mrs Bertrand told us a story.

One day the Easter bunny was hopping along the path, when it came across a strange, mysterious box, just sitting there.  Then the piwakawaka was flying above the path and saw the same box just sitting there.

We talked about what might be in the box. There were lots of different ideas about what could be in the mysterious box.  Some children thought there might be Easter eggs in the box.  (It was Easter time!)

Then we went off and wrote our sentences about what we thought might be in the box.

Later, we opened the lid and took a look inside the mystery box.

We found a beautiful, little tea set.
It had a teapot, cups and saucers, a milk jug and a sugar bowl.

We decided we would take turns to have a pretend tea party.

What a fun writing session we had!!

Problem solvers in Piwakawaka

Maths - Number word problems

We have been diving into the number strand of maths, and exploring different ways of recording our problems.

We talked about:
What operation do we need to use to solve this problem?
What symbol should we use?
Are there two ways we could record this problem?

Here are some of our Goodwood explorers and their recordings:

The children talked about their findings and enjoyed being able to draw and write on the whiteboards to work out their answers.

Can you solve these problems...?

Mia had 7 little Easter eggs and she gave 2 of her eggs to Britney.  How many eggs does Mia have now?

Keegan had 5 Easter eggs and Aston had 6 Easter eggs.  How many eggs did they have altogether?
